About
The Terror of the Killer Carnivorous Coat is a 2011 television film
starring Nathan Head and David Curtis. Conceived as both a spoof and
affectionate homage to the classic Hammer horror films of the 1970s, The
Killer Coat quickly became a cult favourite among genre fans and was broadcast
frequently on the Canadian digital channel Black Flag TV throughout the 2010s.
Serving as a pilot, the film introduced audiences to the character Gabriel
Cushing (played by David Curtis), who has since become the central figure in
an expansive transmedia franchise spanning comic books, novels, short films, a
webseries, and a feature-length production. In The Killer Coat, Nathan Head
stars as Luke Railey, a young man struggling with friendships and finances
after taking a gap year from university, whose life changes dramatically when
he acquires a mysterious coat possessed by the ancient bloodthirsty demon Ka.
Filmed in Portishead in 2009, the production premiered on Canadian digital
television on June 22, 2012, with a special edition DVD released on October
29, 2016. The success of the pilot led to the launch of the wider Gabriel
Cushing franchise, which has since grown into an interconnected saga. This
includes the webseries Gabriel Cushing vs The Zombie Vampires (2012–2013), the
novel Mime (2013), a series of unreleased short films under the Strange
Encounters banner (Mrs Briary’s Scullery, The Stool of the Damned Parts I &
II, and The Unknown Horror of Alchemist Hill), the comic book Gabriel Cushing:
A Fright at the Opera (2014), the feature film Gabriel Cushing at the Carnival
of Sorrows (2018), the novel Hunters (2019), and the two-part comic book
series Curse of the Clockwork Werewolves (2024 and 2025).
